Former Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has called time on his playing career, with the 38-year-old opting to pull up stumps with the Hobart Hurricanes.
After nine seasons in purple and a Big Bash League career spanning 119 games, Wade announced on Thursday he wouldn’t be going around for another summer.
Wade retired from international cricket two years ago but kept playing in the BBL and for Tasmania in the one-day competition.

He transitioned into a role with the Australian team as a wicketkeeping and fielding coach last summer and is understood to not be pursuing any overseas playing opportunities.
Wade played 225 games for the national team across all three formats, including 36 Tests in stints as wicketkeeper and a specialist batsman.
The Hobart-born big-hitter played a key role in the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup semi-final, whacking a 17-ball 41 against Pakistan as Australia went on to lift the trophy.
Wade made his first-class debut for Victoria in 2007 and won four Sheffield Shield titles for the state, including two as captain, before shifting to Tasmania.
He played for the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades across the first six editions of the BBL before moving to the Hurricanes.
He retires in ninth place on the competition’s all-time leading run charts with a tally of 2978.
“(He) is one of those cricketers you always wanted on your side,” Hurricanes head coach Jeff Vaughan said.
“He competed incredibly hard every time he walked onto the field and had the ability to change a game very quickly.
“But equally important has been what he has passed on to the players around him.
“He has a fantastic cricket brain and has always been willing to share his knowledge and challenge those around him to get better.”
Wade finishes as the third-highest run scorer for the Hurricanes with 2446, behind Ben McDermott (3184) and D’Arcy Short (2706).
He made 90 appearances for Hobart, the second most for the franchise behind McDermott (115).
